Abstract | In this chapter, I introduce a case study of Ryan (pseudonym), a student who both challenged and intrigued his teachers. Ryan’s bad behaviours at school quickly alienated some teachers, while his successes on some measures of literacy achievement challenged their thinking about what makes a good literacy learner. The case study of Ryan continues throughout the chapter, prompting a discussion about research into literacies and how literacies are learnt and taught in schools. The chapter concludes with a list of suggestions for teachers—principles to inform practice—and an introduction to critical reflection as a useful tool for reflecting on practice. |
