Abstract | Every day we are bombarded by media messages that suggest we are living in a climate of fear. Recently, a range of new fears – of terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, war and refugees – have joined the old ones that surface regularly – fear of crime, unemployment, illiteracy, family breakdown and so on. Not only does everyone seem to have an opinion, but there are some pretty strong stories of blame in circulation. |
