Abstract | This chapter presents a case study of Ryan (pseudonym), a middle years student who both challenged and intrigued teachers during his enrolment at one school. Ryan's bad behaviours within the school context succeeded in alienating some teachers quite rapidly, while his successes on some measures of literacy achievement challenged teachers' thinking about what makes a good literacy learner. Throughout the chapter, the data and data analysis of Ryan is told as a narrative, interwoven with a discussion of research about literacies and the learning and teaching of literacies in relation to the middle years. The chapter concludes by offering a list of suggestions or implications for teachers– principles to inform teachers' practices – as suggested by the literature and the case study of Ryan. |
