Abstract | Contemporary educational research seems to be undergoing a number of crises – of confidence, of conscience, of faith and of purpose. As educational researchers explore the multiple terrains and varying topologies of the research landscape – from flat and undulating to rocky and precipitous – they find themselves engaging with complex, contested and controversial issues that require sustained energy and commitment from researchers and participants alike. If educational research is to fulfil its mission of generating knowledge and of contributing to productive sociocultural change, the terrains that it inhabits must be traversed and transformed. Additionally, those terrains must be mapped and managed, in order that the parameters and the perimeters, the safe havens and the 'no go' areas, the centres and the margins be subjected to cartographic scrutiny and surveillance. At the very least, they should inform researchers' understandings. To assist with this process, this chapter outlines some suggested conceptual resources for mapping and managing the terrains of contemporary educational research. By distilling selected tactics and tools from the other chapters of this book, the authors highlight some potentially productive navigational aids. Conceptualising, applying and interrogating these tactics and tools constitute one possible approach to enacting relevant and rigorous research that can contribute directly to individual and communal enhancement and sustainability. |
