Abstract | The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the debate over the problematic concept of cocoon communities. Sociologically our method follows the inductive research process that Weber (2002) employed to develop the concept, 'spirit of capitalism'. Thus, various components of the idea of cocoon communities are pieced together over the course of the chapter. Empirically, the notion of cocoon communities is explored through the educational demands of international and local students to overcome their intellectual isolation so that they might benefit from the potential richness and vibrancy of transnational research communities. The educational processes of internationalising traditional practices of nation-centred community formation are analysed in terms of contradictory but nonetheless interdependent dimensions representable by cocoon communities as sites of transnational intellectual engagement. |
