Abstract | In this paper, paradoxes are conceptualised as disjunctures, divergences and apparent contradictions where two or more elements of a phenomenon are somewhat or completely out of alignment and ‘out of sync’. From this perspectives, paradoxes abound in contemporary research, thereby presenting researchers with potential conundrums needing to be resolved. At the same time, paradoxes can enact a beneficial function whereby discordant dimensions can result in productive effects for research projects. This discussion focuses on deconstructing discourses associated with “good research” and “good researchers”. This deconstruction is illustrated by reference to three particular paradoxes. Firstly, research collaborations are lauded, yet researchers are often individually accountable for their outputs. Secondly, while researchers are appropriately explicitly responsible for the ethical conduct of their projects, research participants and stakeholders should be equally ethically accountable. Thirdly, facilitating evocative and poignant stories can constitute “good research”, but such research should also promote respectful listening to others’ stories. Rather than advocating permanent resolutions of these and other research paradoxes and their deconstructed discourses, the author is comfortable with celebrations accruing from their conditional conclusions and their provisional resolutions. This position is perhaps another paradox attending “good research” and “good researchers”. |
