Abstract | This article considers the current law in several of the United States that denies the right to vote to ex-felons. This law impacts disproportionately on African-American individuals, and has unfortunate historical links with racially motivated franchise restrictions. I argue here that the right to vote should be extended to ex-felons, and that denial of the vote to a section of the community in such a manner should be constitutionally impermissible, in line with comparable positions elsewhere. |
