Abstract | In the movie ‘Draft Day’, Jennifer Garner tells Kevin Costner 'Sometimes the correct path is the tortured one', as he labours over which collegiate superstar, he should select with the number one overall NFL draft pick. Metaphorically, this resonates with working in the high-pressure, and often chaotic environment of elite sport today. In this ESSA Medal session, inaugural ESSA Medal recipient, Assoc. Prof. Stephen Bird will take you on his career journey as a sports scientist. From the disappointment of ‘We regret to inform you!’ letters, to being awarded the inaugural ESSA Medal. Since then, Stephen’s career in academia and sports science has taken him all around the world. He has led the integration of performance science support for sport’s elite in high-performance programs across five counties, attending two Olympic Games and experiencing the ultimate high of Olympic Gold. However, many defining career moments are not defined by a medal. Stephen will share the highs and lows, and everything in between, providing valuable insights for early-career sports science graduates. As Stephen reflects on his career, he will link key messages from his recently published book When Wining Matters: Lessons learned from sport’s elite. Ultimately, you will be challenged to 'Find your passion and make it your profession', because when winning matters, not every victory shows up on the scoreboard. |
