Life-Oriented Education: A 30-Year Empirical Research Program in Cambodia

Maharishi Vedic University (MVU) dedicated itself to delivering consciousness-based technologies and programs to Cambodia from 1993 to 2008. In parallel with offering educational programs, as a science-based institution, researchers associated with MVU have continued to scientifically evaluate its performance and programs throughout those years and beyond, using scientific methods to verify and optimise the utility of the programs that they were providing. This book documents that steady and systematic research program—a sustained scientific assessment of its contributions to the remarkable social and economic advancement that unfolded in Cambodia during this time. The research conducted at MVU documents scientifically that the consciousness-based programs increased nonverbal intelligence, improved self-esteem and general health, and reduced depression as well as state and trait anxiety. These results were confirmed in another controlled study at a sister institution, University of Management and Economics (UME) at Kampong Cham, both for students and staff. Additional case studies of students also indicate that, independent of discipline knowledge, study at MVU strengthened moral character, perseverance and determination, as well as creative drive. The research documents a statistically significant association between group practice of MVU’s consciousness-based programs and the steady downward trend in socio-political violence between 1993 and the present.
