Biography
Annette Brömdal (PhD) is an Associate Professor at UniSQ (School of Education and Centre for Health Research) and leads the Sexuality and Gender Research Program Team housed in the UniSQ Centre for Health Research. Their health promotion and rights research focus on bodies, gender and sexuality through co-designing and working in partnerships with LGBTQIA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy community stakeholders. As an inter/nationally recognised scholar, their research contributes to an important evidence-base utilised by multi-stakeholders to alleviate injustices for diverse LGBTQIA+ communities across societal settings. Annette has contributed to 70 high-quality research outputs (47 journal articles; 1 self-authored book; 12 book chapters for prestigious international handbooks/volumes; 2 creative works [NTROs] displayed at a high-profile art exhibition with international curator contributions; 3 stakeholder research reports in the LGBTQIA+ health and rights promotion space; one commissioned research informed teacher toolkit for the Queensland Department of Education; 5 commissioned research articles in alternative outputs [The Conversation, InSight+, The Sector] (1077 citations; h-index 20; i10-index 28 [Google Scholar; 8 July 2025])), have been awarded AUD$6,536,753 in research/grant funding as Chief/Co-Investigator, and is the 12th most active Australian researcher in the field of “Transgender; Lesbian; LGBTQIA+” research (SciVal; June, 2025). They have developed, implemented and evaluated a nurse-led satellite STI testing clinic in a Queensland maximum correctional centre (2023) which was deemed so successful that it was provided further funding by the Communicable Diseases Branch, Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services Division – Queensland Health, to continue the satellite STI testing clinic for an additional 12 months (2024-2025).
Annette has been invited to deliver trans affirming PDs to inter/national staff caring for trans persons in prison, provided policy directives to the VIC and the NT Departments of Corrections on trans and intersex incarcerated persons, are currently an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports (D1), the International Journal of Transgender Health (D1), and an Editor of the book series Routledge Studies in Gender and the Criminal Legal System. They have had their work cited by the UN report “Mapping of Good Practices for the Management of Transgender Prisoners” (2020), and the recent World Professional Association for Transgender Health's “Standards of Care” Version 8 (SOC-8; 2022). In 2024, Annette was co-awarded the Rosalind Franklin Society Special Award in Science (with Kirsty Clark, Jaclyn Hughto, Tania Phillips, Tait Sanders and Amy Mullens) with the journal article “Developing the ‘Oppression-to-Incarceration Cycle’ of Black American and First Nations Australian Trans Women: Applying the Intersectionality Research for Transgender Health Justice Framework” selected as the best paper of the year in the Journal of Correctional Health Care. In leading the UniSQ Sexuality and Gender Research stream, Annette has a wealth of supervisory experience, currently supervising and mentoring 2 research fellows, 3 RA staff, 12 HDR students, of which 10 are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and since 2017, Annette has supervised 9 HDR, 11 Honours, and 25 Postgraduate Masters students to completion. Since 2020, Annette has contributed to more than 58 inter/national media appearances, having an approximate reach of 179 million persons with an estimated advertising value equivalency of AUD$ 1,655,943 including contributing to the ABC Background Briefing (2020) investigating the treatment of trans women in men’s carceral settings in Australia.
