Abstract

In an increasingly commoditised educational ecosystem, the rationale for wrestling with our assumptions—thinking about our thinking or philosophising—is perhaps not well appreciated. Furthermore, given the challenges and time commitment involved, some candidates and supervisors may question its worth. This chapter explores what philosophy can bring to a candidate’s doctoral studies and broader life experience: from an enhanced ability to develop arguments and establish academic competence, to improving self-confidence and satisfying the desire to escape ignorance. It also describes how philosophising presents challenges and reveals the strategies that can be adopted to overcome them. This exploration is driven by the narratives of eight candidates from diverse disciplines who reflected on the role of philosophy in their doctorates.
