Abstract | In many professions, high-performing individuals experience considerable stress and fatigue due to the nature of their roles. This is especially true in military environments, where personnel must perform at the highest possible level to ensure they are capable of delivering, in full, their operational outcomes as required to achieve mission success. Due to the conditions that are inherent in their respective performance settings, individuals in business, sports and military environments may not always find themselves in a state of performance readiness, where their stress and recovery levels are in balance. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the important defining characteristics of a prominent high-performance environment and outline the stress, fatigue, and recovery management approaches. The chapter unpacks the interrelated relationships between stress, sleep, recovery, as well as burnout, and considers novel approaches to the optimisation of rest-activity cycles. These strategies are focused on ensuring optimised recovery and performance states are achieved and maintained over time. The military has received less attention than other areas such as elite sports in this regard but provides an excellent example of the psychological processes in question. |
