Abstract | The survey that is the subject of our presentation is called Snapshot, which has been administered annually to Australian Defence Force Aviation personnel since 2013. Unlike many other safety climate instruments, the core section of Snapshot is based on a widely-accepted model of organisational functioning, namely the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory. The theory-based instrument can help to explain variance in safety outcomes through direct, indirect, and moderated pathways that help us to enrich our reports on safety climate. In our 2018 paper in Aviation Psychology and Applied Human Factors, we tested the fit of our data to the JD-R model in our 2016, 2017, and 2018 Snapshot datasets. We also reported the main effects, indirect effects, and interactions predicted by JD-R theory. We extend those analyses in this presentation to the 2019, 2020, and 2021 data and discuss the importance of having a theoretical basis to safety climate instruments. With more practical issues in mind, we will then discuss lessons learned from many years running surveys in a military setting, particularly the lessons that are not covered in the literature, such as how to integrate safety climate surveys into the overall airworthiness management system, generating and using norms within climate surveys, negotiating the increasingly difficult constraints imposed by institutional ethics committees, and using institutional media to provide general feedback to the survey population. |
