Abstract | USQ is a regional university with the main campus in Toowoomba and satellite campuses at Fraser Coast and Springfield. As at 2007, there were almost 26,000 students enrolled. Of this number, only 3,000 are on-campus: the remainder study online by distance. The Division of Information and Communication Technology Services (DICTS) provides centralised services to the University. It is committed to providing client-focussed services and support to students and staff, no matter where they are located. DICTS has an annual ICT spend in excess of $10 million and supports in total 2,400+ PCs and about 400 servers. The main corporate systems at USQ are Peoplesoft (Student Administration, Financials and HR) and Moodle – the Learning Management System. As well, there are many other applications and several research centres which require high computing performance. Over the last few years, USQ has experienced an increase in systems usage, data and Internet access. For example, Internet traffic has grown from 16,000 Gb in 2006 to 30,000 Gb in 2008. Currently, the volume of email (including spam messages) is 300 million email messages per year. Due to the high number of international students, it is critically important to provide Internet access to students on a 24x7 basis. |
