Abstract | Virtual worlds present an opportunity to shift pedagogy at all levels of education. Technology that Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students are exposed to during their studies has a significant impact on the technology they use in their future classrooms. As such, ITE courses and faculty have an important role to play in the introduction, development and support of innovative educational technology. Evidence gathered from the introduction of virtual worlds in an ITE course in regional Australia provides insights into the barriers and benefits of virtual worlds in teaching and learning. ITE students and faculty displayed a complex interaction of perceptions, experiences, motivations and barriers. These inter-related factors formed the basis for the development of a 'phases of engagement' model. The model informed where ITE students and faculty were situated on a perception/experience matrix. This matrix is a visual tool for identifying how an individual might shift from their initial perceptions once they have been exposed to virtual world resources and experiences. Real world examples are provided of ITE students who created virtual world environments and where they were situated on the matrix. This provides a framework for discussing the role that virtual worlds can play in shifting pedagogical practices of ITE students, faculty and classroom teachers. |
