Abstract | Since the year 2000, there has been a significant decline in the number of students enrolling in high school Information Technology (IT) subjects within Queensland and tertiary institutions in Australia. This decline in student participation and interest in IT careers has led to a forecasted shortage of IT skills in Australia. Demand for IT workers is expected to grow by 100,000 by 2023, which may strain Australian businesses trying to recruit IT workers to meet this demand. One possible reason for this decline is the lack of specific content on IT careers in the Australian Curriculum. This research focuses on the structural factors (curriculum and teachers) that influence student perceptions about IT subject selection and IT careers. The study examined the effectiveness of implementing an IT curriculum using tech-savvy web-based teaching tools at four schools in regional Queensland. This research aims to better understand the factors that influence students’ IT study and career choices and inform educational practitioners when developing programmes aimed at increasing students’ involvement in IT education and vocational pathways. |
