Abstract | Epoxy resins are widely applied in various industries owing to its excellent comprehensive properties. Nevertheless, the manufacturing process of conventional epoxy resins is overdependent on petroleum resources, which is harmful to the environment. Therefore, replacing traditional petroleum-based chemicals with bio-derived ones to develop bio-based epoxy resins is an important direction of sustainable development strategy. Herein, a systematic overview of recent advances in bio-based epoxy resins is presented according to the differences in bio-based sources and structures. The synthesis, structure-performance relationship and functionalization methods of bio-based epoxy resins are also discussed, highlighting the development opportunities of bio-based materials for flame-retardant, toughening, heat-resistant and other functional epoxy resins. Finally, a recycling strategy for bio-based epoxy resins is proposed. The intention of this chapter is not only to summarize the recent progress of bio-based epoxy resins, but more importantly to provide a deeper and broader understanding of biobased epoxy resins to promote its faster development. |
