Abstract | Over the last two decades, research in areas of epidemiology, neuroscience and psychology have revealed the high prevalence of child maltreatment in our communities, and its life-long impact on our physical and mental health. This seminar will provide an overview of key theoretical models of the nature and impact of child maltreatment; explore key principles of practice and treatment modalities when working with at-risk families; and conclude with a discussion of the need for counsellors to practice self-awareness, self-reflection and self-care when working with such vulnerable populations. |
