Abstract | This chapter considers the important relationship between education and democracy in contemporary democratic societies. Although lauded as an inclusive and participatory system of social and political governance, democracy remains a contested concept. There are multiple complex challenges that confront democracy and education in the twenty-first century, including climate change, global pandemics, widening economic inequality, and social unrest. Further, neoliberal policymaking reforms over many decades have rendered education and democracy as commodities within a globalized marketplace. In response to these challenges, this chapter presents an argument for moving toward an education that is for democracy. |
