Abstract | The term 'running rugby' encapsulates both a style of play and an attitude towards playing the game. Used to describe an expansive, ball-in-hand approach to the game, running rugby reduces kicking to the least preferred use of possession. A flat, narrow backline alignment combined with skilful and deft passing close to the opposition, continuous support, and straight running using all 15 players across the width of the field are the hallmarks of successful use of running rugby. Australian rugby officials, players and fans have traditionally characterised this in parochial terms as a quintessentially 'Australian' style of play. This article will challenge this sense of Australian exceptionalism, which is grounded in rugby's origins as a Eurocentric, middle- and upper-class amateur sport. Instead, a transnational perspective is adopted, which positions running rugby as a fusion of ‘home-grown’ and international influences. |
