Abstract | This article explores a significant grassroots initiative that began in 1971 and which continues today to provide quality art education to people living in regional and remote areas of Queensland, Australia. Mervyn Moriarty, a practicing artist, and the founder of the organisation now known as Flying Arts Alliance (FAA), used light aircraft and a cadre of committed volunteers to provide authentic arts experiences to an Australian population which then numbered less than two million people dispersed across a state the size of Western Europe. The Flying Arts workshops provided by Moriarty, and which continue today through a combination of online and physical workshops, provided people in Queensland with opportunities only available at that time in the major metropolitan centres. This historical exploration of Moriarty’s impact on Queensland art education parallels increasing recognition of the provision of quality arts education for rural, regional and remote areas. |
