Abstract | With regard to a philosophical vision of learning as growth (Dewey, 1916), as the development of self and society through learning, this chapter explores career development learning through the conceptual prism of precepts drawn from of adult learning theories, andragogy (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 2005) and transformative learning (Mezirow, 2000). Three precepts of adult learning theory are considered with a view toward convergence with the theory and practices of career development learning: (a) perspective transformation, (b) readiness to learn, and (c) self-determined learning. This chapter serves as a foundation to the project of a theoretical synthesis of the disciplines, with the concomitant aim of producing an obverse nexus of the three precepts: namely, transformative career development learning and its capacity for (a) transformation through perspective, (b) learning for readiness, and (c) learning for self-determination. |
