Abstract | Counseling is a psychological confluence between two people: the client and the practitioner. Accordingly, this chapter presents the consideration of the working alliance and its centrality to counseling for work, job, and career. It addresses this gap in the literature through a consideration of practitioner countertransference and an ethic of reflexivity. To some extent, the lack of attention on the practitioner in career development literature may be a consequence of historical distinctions between psychotherapy and career counseling. To counter these distinctions, the chapter presents examples of practice in which the role of work in the client's life is integrated into the counseling of the whole person, rather than work being treated as an objectified demographic variable. It begins with an overview of contemporary challenges to artificial dichotomies that have inappropriately separated psychotherapy and career counseling. |
