Aesthetic Positive Pedagogy: Aspiring to Empowerment in the Classroom and Beyond

This book introduces and explores a new pedagogical approach called Aesthetic Positive Pedagogy (APP), for teachers and students in a variety of educational contexts. The book is built on the need for educational institutions and communities to seriously consider a strong positive approach to learning and teaching, ultimately leading to a better world. Recent uncertainty has shown us the incredible adversity young people and children are facing, concerns we may not have even fathomed just 10 years ago. The global pandemic, and signifcantly destructive natural disasters such as bushfres, foods, earthquakes, as well as civil unrest and
war are increasingly impacting young people’s wellbeing and resilience. It is critical we fnd ways to support learning and growth as well as more caring approaches to thinking about ourselves, others and the earth through troubled times. One such way is for teachers to implement Aesthetic Positive Pedagogy (APP). Based on pre-existing philosophies such as
Aesthetic Education and positive pedagogy, APP encourages teachers to carefully consider their language use as well as other modal resources in the classroom. Using aesthetic experience and the arts as a core to all learning, wellbeing and resilience for teachers and students improve. Further, caring and compassionate citizenship is encouraged for all students. In the book, we share examples of APP in practice across different educational contexts such as in schools and higher education aiming for a hopeful future.
