Abstract | This paper shares reflections on the issues, strategies and practices that have been pursued to coordinate livelihood and community recovery in a flooded location. It advocates a community-based disaster management model (Jahangiri, et al., 2011) to facilitate rebuilding and planning for the future within a community. It highlights the need for coordination between various stakeholder groups to facilitate rebuilding, long-term redevelopment, and disaster preparedness across the community. In particular the paper discusses pertinent issues and the need for participation by local community members who contribute to planning, coordination and organisation of the rebuilding and recovery process through the various disaster management cycles. The importance of establishing partnerships, ensuring leadership capacity, maintaining effective communication, providing targeted support, and strengthening capacity is highlighted. |
