Abstract | On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organisation characterised the COVID-19 virus spread as a pandemic. Teachers working with students with a vision impairment (VI) across all sectors were required to significantly reconfigure their teaching practices at very short notice to suit school closures and other restrictions. This presentation shares the results of qualitative research with teachers of students with VI in Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific countries. The research aimed to assess the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions for students who were not able to access the physical school environment, with a particular focus on equity of access for students who did not have internet or computers in the home environment. The survey and interview questions were designed to investigate the challenges teachers encountered making sudden changes to delivery, and issues associated with social distancing in school settings when students returned. Through this research the presenters have collated practices, innovations, and resources to inform the work of teachers and communities of practice should further COVID-19 restrictions, medical emergencies, or natural disasters occur. |
