Abstract	This article showcases the cumulative and longitudinal strength of research and development from the Leadership Research International (LRI) group that has existed for over 20 years. The focus of recent research has explored the factors contributing to capacity building for ongoing sustainability of whole school improvement. Of significance has been the development of an understanding of the importance of leadership in sustaining ongoing processes of improvement. A co-research approach working directly with school leadership teams has highlighted the importance of alignment of a school’s aspirational Vision for Learning with the collaborative development of a pedagogical framework. The unfolding understanding of sustainability of this contextual knowledge has led the researchers to explore the importance of leadership within context. A specific focus has been on the role of the principal and their relationship with: a) the system leaders; b) the in school leadership team; and c) schools within a system.
