Abstract | We would like to thank Dr. Zdeněk Dvořák for his letter on our paper in the European Journal of Nutrition reporting the effects of pelargonidin 3-glucoside on inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic syndrome in rats [1]. We have reported similar biological responses in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome and DSS-induced inflammatory bowel disease to another common anthocyanin, cyanidin 3-glucoside from Queen Garnet plums [2, 3]. We cited the study of Biagolo et al. (reference 8 in Dr. Dvořák’s letter) [4] in our paper as one of several studies suggesting a range of mechanisms for pelargonidin 3-glucoside to act as an anti-inflammatory agent in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Dvořák has now discussed further evidence that activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in the gastrointestinal tract by anthocyanins could be involved in the intestinal response to pelargonidin 3-glucoside [5, 6]. We agree that this receptor is important in intestinal health and that activation of this receptor could be one mechanism to attenuate the inflammatory state in our rat models of inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic syndrome. |
